Stephen King - The Stand

Stephen King - The Stand

If he never wrote another word, Stephen King deserves to be remembered for this, his contribution to the "Disaster Novel" genre. (NOTE: This review applies to the ORIGINAL release of the novel, not the "Special Edition")

Stephen King - The Stand

It begins innocuously enough, with an army officer running away from his base. But he has left it too late, and he carries a new disease into the world. Over the next months people begin to die, in small numbers at first, then in their hundreds, thousands and finally millions.

The survivors, a disparate band drawn from all walks of life, find they have to make a choice; to join with the forces of evil, personified in Flagg (one of the best fictional villains in living memory) or to take a "Stand" for good, personified by Aunt Abigail, an old wizened black woman with a fundamentalist approach to her faith.

Soon all the survivors are lined up on one side or the other, and the final battle for their future destiny is set up when the main characters must take their own "Stand"

The questions of faith posed by this, and how each of the protagonists make their choices, form the moral core of this book, and the rigours of basic survival when civilisation has fallen forms the backbone of the plot, but it is the characters who stick in your mind long after you've finished reading.

King has always been good at "country" types, but here he shows a sure hand with such disparate people as a deaf-mute, a rock star, a garage worker, a pregnant teenager and her admirer-from-afar neighbour Harold (a gentleman so slimy you'll feel like taking a shower after just reading about him)

You feel rapport with these characters, and are soon cheering them on, and King has managed to reel in his propensity for "bloat", and doesn't let any one character take over.

The book carries a strong moral tone throughout, and at times seems almost biblical in its "fire-and-brimstone" intensity. In typical King fashion there are some terrifying set pieces, the pick of which takes place in a tunnel which is full of dead and decomposing bodies that must be navigated without a light. Not for the squeamish.

A lot of people have been daunted by the sheer size of this book. At over 1000 pages, it is not a quick read, and in the early chapters it is sometimes difficult to keep track of its large list of characters. Also, King seems to take delight in slowing things down and looking in great detail at some pretty unpleasant deaths as a result of the disease - a super-flu which results in particularly messy fluid expulsion.

However once Flagg appears and starts insinuating himself into the survivors' dreams. the tension starts to crank up and King knows how to keep you hooked, cheering the good guys along to the denoument.

I won't spoil it by giving away the ending, but the final "Stand" doesn't come quite as expected, and has some truly shocking consequences for the protagonists.

For a jaded horror fan brought up on John Wyndham and John Christopher, this book revitalised my interest back in the late 70's. This was the book that brought me back to horror, and made me want to write it myself.

For that alone it's got a lot to answer for.

What Does SHTF Stand For?

What Does SHTF Stand For?

National Geographic's show Doomsday Preppers has really popularized the concept of "Prepping" and terms like SHTF. So what does SHTF stand for and what does it have with a "doomsday" scenario.

What Does SHTF Stand For?

What Does SHTF Stand For?

What Does SHTF Stand For?

What Does SHTF Stand For?

What Does SHTF Stand For?

SHTF stands for the phrase "Sh-t Hits the Fan" and refers to many scenarios depending upon who is using the term.

For some people it means the total breakdown of society. These people are generally the "survivalists" who prepare by stocking guns and ammunition for the day when society disintegrates and it is like the movie "Mad Max."

Survivalists actually think that they will have to struggle to survive - literally - as a mad life and death struggle ensues in a collapsed society.

If you ask someone who is called a "prepper" what does SHTF stand for, they will tell you about less drastic, though still major events like economic collapse and hyperinflation.

Some people realize that it is a personal "SHTF" scenario when they lose their job or have a similar financial crisis. Others believe that the term SHTF stands for something only if it is a widespread calamity.

More polite people use the term "Sewage" when they are asked what does SHTF stand for.

So now if someone asks you what does SHTF stand for, you'll be able to answer intelligently and also know what a prepper is and what a survivalist is.

If you want to become more prepared for an emergency, there are many things you can do, but the first thing is to anticipate is something happening at the worst possible time. The worst possible time is when you are away from the safety and security of your home, perhaps driving to work or a friend's house.

An Overview of Household Fans

An Overview of Household Fans

When it comes to household fans, there are many different kinds to choose from. One of the most popular of course is the ceiling fan, which can be purchased with a multitude of different features. These can include different speed settings, as well as lights that have different settings. They are directly mounted in the ceiling, hang down, and are hard wired into your regular wiring. Some can be turned on from the unit itself, and also from a switch on the wall. Adjustments are made on the fan itself, from a pull string, or turn switches that are out of the way of the spinning blades. These blades can be made from various materials, such as wood, metal, or even plastic.

An Overview of Household Fans

There are other household fans to choose from as well. One of the other popular kinds is the box fan. These box fans are a fan in a housing with mesh sides, and these come in various shapes and sizes, depending on your needs. Some even have two fans, which you can set for intake of fresh air and sucking hot air out. They can stand alone, on a floor, and some models can be mounted directly into a window. These fans usually have an adjustable setting, and some even have remote or programmable controls.

One of the most popular fans is the fan that comes on a stand. These have adjustable heights, and can be tilted or even oscillating, which means that they rotate back and forth on a predetermined pattern. Many come with a variety of different settings, and can have a remote control, so you can adjust their speed from anywhere in a room.

Fans are an invaluable appliance in the summer. They can be set in a window for drawing hot air out of your house, or for bringing in cooler evening air. They can be used for removing dust and other contaminants from your house, as well as many other applications. It is important that when you are looking for a household fan that you follow some guidelines. One is that you should make sure that the fan blades are completely enclosed, especially when you have children or pets. The blades spin at an extremely high rotation, and can seriously injure you if they don't have some covering over them.

Make sure that whichever size or style of fan is UL listed, which will ensure that it is safe. If you already have a fan, you need to check it each year before you use it. Make sure that the cord and plug are in good condition, and clean the casing and fan blades, while unplugged. Having dust accumulated on the fan blades, or the covering will make the motor work harder, and the air flow won't be that good. If you can, it is a good idea to check the owner's manual to see if there is some way to oil the turning mechanism. Some have sealed bearings, so you don't need to lubricate them in any way.

If you are buying a ceiling fan, make sure that you follow the installation instructions carefully, and turn off the power at the breaker box. Depending on the size and the model, you may even have to have a professional come and set it up for you.
